Semaglutide Linked to 40% Drop in Asthma Attacks

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, has shown promising respiratory benefits in a recent large‑scale real‑world study. Researchers found that patients using the drug experienced nearly 40 % fewer asthma attacks and about 20 % fewer chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) flare‑ups compared with those not on the medication.

The study, which analyzed data from thousands of patients across multiple health systems, suggests that GLP‑1 receptor agonists may exert protective effects on the lungs in addition to their well‑known roles in managing diabetes and obesity. However, investigators caution that these observational findings need confirmation through randomized clinical trials before the medication can be recommended specifically for respiratory conditions.

If future trials corroborate these results, semaglutide could represent a dual‑benefit therapy for patients with metabolic disorders who also suffer from asthma or COPD, potentially expanding its therapeutic scope beyond weight management and glycaemic control.
