Self‑destructing plastic degrades in six days without microplastics
Scientists have engineered a new type of “living plastic” that can be programmed to self‑destruct on demand. The material is a composite of a biodegradable polymer matrix and genetically modified bacteria that, when triggered, produce enzymes capable of breaking the plastic down into harmless organic compounds. In laboratory tests, the composite degraded completely within six days, leaving no microplastic residues.
The development addresses a major challenge in single‑use plastic management. Conventional plastics often fragment into microplastics that persist in ecosystems, while many biodegradable alternatives still require industrial composting facilities. By contrast, the engineered bacteria can be activated by a simple chemical cue, enabling the plastic to disintegrate in a wide range of environments, including ordinary household waste streams.
If scaled up, the technology could reduce the environmental footprint of everyday products such as packaging, utensils, and disposable items. Further research will focus on ensuring the safety of the engineered microbes, optimizing the degradation speed, and evaluating the economic feasibility of commercial production.
