Scientists Warn of Hidden Damage from Summer Wildfires
Bangor University researchers have warned that the damage caused by the recent coastal storm is far greater than what was initially apparent. A team from the university’s Civil Engineering Department conducted a detailed assessment of the waterfront infrastructure, using ground‑penetrating radar and high‑resolution drone imagery to investigate the extent of the impact.
Their findings revealed extensive subsurface cracks and weakened foundations beneath several piers and seawalls that were not visible during the early post‑storm inspections. The hidden damage, which includes compromised concrete cores and corroded steel reinforcement, could jeopardise the long‑term stability of the structures and necessitate more extensive repairs than originally planned.
The university is now collaborating with local authorities to incorporate these new insights into the reconstruction strategy. The expanded scope of work will aim to address the underlying structural weaknesses, ensuring the resilience of Bangor’s coastal defenses for future weather events.
