Scientists recreate ancient burned scrolls using authentic papyrus and ink

Douglas Seiler, an independent artist and collector, has assembled a unique manuscript by sourcing authentic papyrus and reed pens from Egypt and traditional lampblack ink from Japan. After acquiring the materials, Seiler enlisted a group of high school students to hand‑write a series of texts onto the papyrus, employing the imported tools and ink in a process that mirrors ancient scribal techniques.

The students inscribed the scroll with selected passages from the Star Wars saga, excerpts from the Bible, and a quotation from the 1960s science‑fiction television series *The Outer Limits*. The project, which blends contemporary pop culture with historic writing media, is slated for display at an upcoming exhibition highlighting cross‑cultural artistic collaborations.
