Scientists name new beetle genus Luffy after anime character

Scientists have formally described a new beetle genus, naming it *Luffy* after the elastic protagonist of the popular manga and anime series *One Piece*. The discovery, announced in a peer‑reviewed entomology journal, adds several species to the family Carabidae and marks one of the few recent instances where a taxonomic group has been directly inspired by contemporary pop culture.

The beetles are distinguished by exceptionally long, slender mandibles, antennae and mouthparts that can extend outward, a morphology the researchers likened to the rubber‑like abilities of the fictional character. Fieldwork conducted in tropical forest habitats revealed the insects’ unique feeding adaptations, which allow them to probe deep crevices for prey. By linking the genus name to a widely recognized cultural icon, the authors aim to increase public interest in biodiversity while adhering to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.
