Scientists cite climate change and geological factors in deadly Nepal-China flood
Researchers have identified a “compound crisis” as the primary driver behind the recent flood, linking the event to a combination of long‑term climatic and geological factors. According to the study, sustained regional warming has accelerated glacier retreat and permafrost thaw, undermining the stability of the terrain and increasing the volume of meltwater that can be released suddenly. These processes, together with inherent geological instability, created conditions in which a flood could develop rapidly and with greater intensity than previously recorded.
The analysis also notes that the 2015 earthquake in the area likely contributed to the disaster by destabilizing the already weakened ground and triggering landslides that blocked natural drainage pathways. By highlighting the interplay of climate change, cryospheric dynamics, and seismic activity, the researchers underscore the growing vulnerability of regions where multiple environmental stressors converge, suggesting that future flood risk assessments must account for such interconnected hazards.
