Scientists aim to develop volcano forecasts similar to weather predictions
A volcanologist with the U.S. Geological Survey said there is “no reason we can’t think that, at some point in the future, we can have volcano forecasts that are like weather forecasts,” highlighting a growing ambition within the scientific community to move beyond reactive alerts toward routine predictive modeling. The comment was made during a briefing on the agency’s expanded monitoring program, which aims to integrate real‑time seismic, deformation, gas‑emission, and satellite data into a unified forecasting framework.
Researchers are currently testing machine‑learning algorithms that ingest multi‑sensor streams to identify patterns preceding eruptions, while new satellite constellations provide near‑continuous thermal and ash‑plume observations. Collaborative projects between the USGS, universities, and international volcano observatories are piloting prototype models that generate probabilistic eruption outlooks on daily to weekly timescales. Challenges cited include the inherent variability of magmatic systems, limited historical eruption records, and the need for standardized data sharing across jurisdictions.
If these efforts succeed, authorities could receive routine volcanic risk bulletins comparable to daily weather reports, allowing communities to plan evacuations, infrastructure protection, and aviation routing with greater lead time. The USGS plans to release its first operational forecast products within the next five years, marking a potential shift in how volcanic hazards are communicated and managed.
