Scented cleaning products generate inhalable nanoparticles, study shows
A recent study examined the aromas commonly associated with a freshly cleaned room and the hidden health implications of those scents. Researchers led by Brandon Boor discovered that fragrance compounds found in both conventional cleaning agents and botanical essential‑oil products rapidly undergo chemical reactions in indoor air, creating nanoparticles capable of penetrating deep into the respiratory system when inhaled.
The team’s findings suggest that the pleasant citrus, pine or floral notes many people associate with cleanliness are actually markers of invisible particulate pollution. To mitigate exposure, the researchers recommend opting for unscented cleaning formulations, operating exhaust fans during and after cleaning, and avoiding the use of devices that generate ozone, which can exacerbate the formation of airborne nanoparticles.
