Scales and a measuring tape can predict future illness better than expensive biological age tests
A recent study from Tampere University has shown that simple, cost‑effective measures of health risk—body mass index, waist‑to‑hip ratio, smoking habits and alcohol consumption—are more reliable predictors of future disease than complex biological age tests based on epigenetic markers. The research compared the predictive power of these traditional metrics with that of epigenetic “biological age” assays, which estimate an individual’s physiological aging through DNA methylation patterns.
The findings indicate that the conventional indicators, which are easy to obtain in routine clinical settings, consistently outperformed the epigenetic tests in forecasting a range of health outcomes. Researchers noted that while epigenetic age provides a novel perspective on biological aging, its predictive advantage over established risk factors remains limited. The study underscores the continued relevance of basic anthropometric and lifestyle assessments in disease risk stratification.
These results suggest that clinicians and public health practitioners can rely on straightforward, inexpensive measurements to identify individuals at higher risk for chronic conditions, rather than investing in more elaborate epigenetic testing. The study reinforces the value of traditional risk assessment tools in guiding preventive health strategies.
