Saudi strike on Houthi targets sparks new Red Sea front amid blockade threats

The Houthis have denounced Riyadh as a “dangerous escalation” after the Saudi government struck a series of military targets belonging to the rebel group on Friday. The attack came amid a broader Saudi‑led campaign aimed at curbing Houthi influence in the Red Sea, where the rebels have recently imposed a maritime blockade on the world’s largest oil producer and struck several of its vessels.

Saudi forces reportedly hit multiple Houthi positions along the Yemeni coast, citing the need to neutralise threats to shipping lanes and to support the Yemeni government’s fight against insurgents. The Houthis, in turn, have warned that the strike would intensify hostilities and could jeopardise regional stability, citing the broader context of escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran‑backed factions in Yemen.
