Satellite Launches Threaten Astronomy
A new study by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) warns that the planned deployment of over 1.7 million satellites into Earth’s orbit—many of which are highly visible—could severely disrupt ground-based astronomy. The research highlights that even faint satellites, when present in large numbers, pose a growing threat to observations by modern telescopes, which rely on unobstructed views of the night sky. The ESO estimates that limiting the number of faint satellites to no more than 100,000—those not visible to the naked eye—would be critical to preserving the integrity of astronomical research.
The study, published in *Astronomy & Astrophysics*, analyzes data from existing satellite constellations, such as those operated by SpaceX’s Starlink, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, and OneWeb, which collectively plan to launch tens of thousands of additional satellites. Brighter satellites already cause streaks in long-exposure images and interfere with sensitive instruments, while even dimmer ones could disrupt surveys of deep-space phenomena. The ESO emphasizes that current regulatory frameworks lack provisions to address the cumulative impact of such large-scale satellite deployments, creating a gap in protections for scientific observation.
The findings underscore the urgency of international collaboration to establish guidelines balancing technological expansion with astronomical needs. The ESO has called for stricter regulations on satellite brightness and orbital density, urging policymakers and satellite operators to adopt measures that minimize light pollution and preserve the night sky. As global demand for satellite-based services grows, the study serves as a stark reminder of the need to safeguard scientific infrastructure and the fundamental human experience of observing the cosmos.
