Satellite images show drought lowering rivers across Europe

Half of Europe’s land area is currently under drought conditions, with major waterways such as the Danube, the Rhine and their tributaries reporting significantly reduced flow levels. Meteorological agencies across the continent have recorded below‑average precipitation for several consecutive weeks, while persistent high temperatures have accelerated evaporation, leading to the widespread depletion of surface water resources.

The drought is affecting agricultural output, hydro‑electric generation and water‑intake for municipalities throughout Central and Eastern Europe. National water authorities have issued restrictions on irrigation and non‑essential water use, and the European Drought Observatory is monitoring the situation to coordinate cross‑border water management.
