Sandwich Regulation Outpaces AI in U.S., Says Tegmark

Futurist and MIT professor Max Tegmark raised a question about regulatory priorities in a recent interview, noting that in the United States, sandwich safety standards are more comprehensively codified than the emerging rules governing artificial intelligence (AI). Tegmark, known for his work on the societal impacts of advanced technologies, highlighted the disparity by pointing to the extensive federal and state guidelines that govern food labeling, allergen disclosure, and hygiene practices for prepared foods, contrasted with the fragmented and largely voluntary frameworks that currently oversee AI development and deployment.

He suggested that the gap reflects a lag in legislative response to rapidly evolving AI capabilities, and called for a coordinated effort to establish clearer standards that address issues such as algorithmic bias, transparency, and accountability. Tegmark’s remarks come amid growing congressional interest in AI oversight, with several bills under consideration that aim to create a more structured regulatory environment comparable to that which already exists for the food industry.
