San Fermin 2026 bull run begins in Pamplona

Pamplona will host the opening bull run of the 2026 San Fermin festival on July 7, marking the first “encierro” of the season. Six bulls will be released from the corral at the city’s historic Plaza de Toros and will sprint through the narrow streets of the old town, where runners aim to stay ahead of the animals for a short distance before reaching safety.

The event follows a tradition that dates back to the early 20th century, drawing participants and spectators from around the world. Organizers have confirmed that the route will remain the classic 825‑meter stretch from the corral to the bullring, and that medical and security teams will be positioned at key points along the path. In recent years, the number of runners has been capped at 800 to enhance safety, and participants must undergo a brief briefing on the rules and emergency procedures before the run.

The 2026 encierro is expected to attract thousands of visitors, contributing to the city’s tourism economy while preserving the cultural heritage of the San Fermin celebrations. The run will conclude with the traditional fireworks and the opening of the festival’s other events, including music, dance, and religious ceremonies.
