Russian strike hits central Kyiv book market, targeting cultural sites

A Russian missile strike on Sunday hit the central book market in Kyiv, causing damage to the commercial hub that sells a wide range of Ukrainian literature and educational materials. The attack occurred amid an intensified campaign of aerial bombardments across the capital, which has seen numerous civilian and cultural sites targeted in recent weeks. Local authorities reported that the market sustained structural damage and that several stalls were destroyed, though no casualties were immediately confirmed.

FRANCE 24 correspondent Emmanuelle Chaze described the strike as part of a broader effort to undermine Ukrainian culture, stating that the assaults aim at “Ukrainian culture, the Ukrainian language and Ukrainian identity.” She noted that, since the start of the summer, Russian forces have destroyed millions of books in similar attacks and have also targeted churches and other key cultural institutions, a pattern she characterises as an attempt to weaken the nation’s cultural heritage. Ukrainian officials have condemned the strike, reaffirming their commitment to protect cultural sites while continuing defensive operations.
