Russian oil spill prompts cleanup along 12 km of Oman's coast

Cleanup crews have been deployed along a 12‑kilometre stretch of Oman's coastline after a tanker ran aground and released oil into the sea. The incident, reported early Tuesday, involved a vessel carrying an estimated 2,500 tonnes of crude that struck a reef near the port of Salalah, prompting an immediate spill response from local authorities.

The Omani Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, together with the national oil spill response team and several international contractors, are conducting shoreline washing, containment, and wildlife rescue operations. As of the latest briefing, approximately 1,800 cubic metres of oil have been recovered, while monitoring teams continue to assess potential damage to marine habitats and fishing zones. Officials expect the cleanup to take several weeks, emphasizing that ongoing surveillance will determine any further environmental remediation required.
