Russian forces target schools, offices and buses in Zaporizhzhia

The security situation in Zaporizhzhia, a densely populated city of roughly 800,000 residents situated about 30 kilometres from the active front line in southeastern Ukraine, has been reported as deteriorating in recent weeks. Local officials and Ukrainian defense authorities note an increase in artillery and drone activity targeting the outskirts of the city, raising concerns about the safety of civilians and critical infrastructure.

According to the Zaporizhzhia regional administration, the city has experienced multiple incidents of shelling since early May, resulting in damage to residential blocks, a power substation, and a municipal water facility. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence confirmed that Russian forces have intensified their fire missions in the direction of the city as part of broader operations along the Dnipro River corridor. Preliminary casualty figures released by the regional health department indicate at least 12 civilian injuries and three fatalities, while displacement estimates suggest that more than 5,000 residents have temporarily relocated to nearby towns or shelters. Humanitarian agencies have reported shortages of medical supplies and electricity outages affecting several districts.

Ukrainian authorities have urged residents to remain in designated shelters, reinforced air‑defence measures around the city, and called for increased international assistance to address the growing humanitarian needs.
