Russia sends four sanctioned ships into Mediterranean via Gibraltar

Four Russian vessels – a destroyer, a sanctioned cargo ship, a tanker and a third support craft – passed through the Strait of Gibraltar on 27 August and entered the Mediterranean Sea, ending what analysts described as the first interruption of Russia’s continuous naval presence in the region since 2013. The convoy’s arrival marks the re‑establishment of a fleet that has routinely operated in the eastern Mediterranean for more than a decade, providing logistical support to Russian forces and commercial interests.
