Russia orders registration of domestic birds, camels and reindeer

A Russian government decree that came into force on Tuesday mandates the registration of certain domestic animals, including birds, camels and reindeer. The regulation, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, requires owners to submit information about these animals to local authorities, ostensibly to improve veterinary oversight and traceability. The decree lists specific categories of birds—such as chickens, ducks and geese—alongside camels and reindeer, and outlines a filing process that involves submitting documentation to regional registration offices.

Following the announcement, many citizens arrived at government service centres carrying live chickens and other animals, fearing that the law required physical presentation of the livestock for registration. Within hours, officials clarified that owners need only provide the required paperwork and do not have to bring the animals to the offices. The clarification aimed to ease the confusion and streamline compliance, allowing the registration to be completed through standard documentation channels without the need for on‑site animal inspection.
