Russia, North Korea Build First Road Connection in Far East

Russia and North Korea have begun constructing their first direct road link in the Far East, a project that connects the Russian Primorsky Krai region with North Korea’s Rason Special Economic Zone. The 20‑kilometre route, slated for completion in 2028, will facilitate the movement of goods and personnel across the border and marks a deepening of infrastructure cooperation between the two countries, which have expanded diplomatic and economic ties in recent years.

Ukrainian officials have expressed concern that the new corridor could enhance Russia’s logistical capabilities in the region and provide a strategic conduit for military or commercial traffic. Kyiv’s foreign ministry issued a statement warning that the development may alter the security balance in Northeast Asia and called for international monitoring of the project’s purpose and usage. The road construction proceeds under joint supervision, with both Moscow and Pyongyang affirming its civilian economic intent while observers note its potential broader implications.
