Rohingya refugees protest in Bangladesh nine years after exodus

Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh’s sprawling camps near Cox’s Bazar staged a coordinated protest on Tuesday, marking the ninth anniversary of the mass exodus that forced more than 700,000 people to flee violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Organized by community leaders and supported by several humanitarian groups, the demonstration featured chants and placards calling for accelerated repatriation, improved living conditions, and greater access to education and livelihood opportunities within the camps. Authorities reported that around 2,000 participants gathered at the main camp entrance, while security forces maintained a presence to ensure order and prevent clashes.

Bangladeshi officials reiterated their commitment to a voluntary, safe return of the Rohingya, emphasizing ongoing diplomatic efforts with Myanmar and the United Nations to secure guarantees of citizenship and security for returnees.
