RNA Delivery Tags Direct Messages to Distant Neuron Branches
A research team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has identified a key mechanism that directs messenger RNA (mRNA) to specific sites within neurons. The scientists found that a small chemical modification on the RNA molecule functions as a “delivery tag,” enabling selected transcripts to be transported from the cell body to distant dendrites and axons where local protein synthesis is required.
The discovery sheds light on how neurons achieve spatially precise protein production, a process essential for synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. By revealing the molecular cue that guides mRNA trafficking, the study provides a new framework for investigating disorders in which RNA transport is disrupted and may ultimately inform the development of targeted therapies for neurodegenerative diseases.
