Rising Cancer Rates in Adults Under 55 Linked to Accelerated Biological Aging
Rising rates of cancer among adults under 55 have prompted researchers to investigate whether accelerated biological aging could be a contributing factor. A recent study found that individuals from more recent birth cohorts exhibit higher biological age markers than those from earlier generations, even when they share the same chronological age.
The researchers measured biological age using epigenetic clocks and other biomarkers, and correlated the results with cancer incidence data. They reported that greater biological age acceleration was associated with an increased risk of early‑onset cancers, particularly lung, gastrointestinal, uterine and colorectal cancers. The findings suggest that the pace of cellular aging may help explain why younger adults are now more frequently diagnosed with these malignancies.
If confirmed by further studies, the link between accelerated biological aging and early‑onset cancer could inform prevention strategies and screening guidelines.
