Restoration Efforts Aim to Revive European Flat Oyster Reefs
European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) once thrived along the North Sea coast, building extensive reefs that supported a diverse array of marine life. Recent surveys show the species has become exceedingly rare, and the reefs it once formed have largely vanished, leaving a gap in the region’s ecological structure. The loss of these three‑dimensional habitats has removed a key refuge for more than 100 marine species, disrupting local food webs and reducing overall biodiversity.
Efforts to restore the North Sea ecosystem now focus on reintroducing the flat oyster while simultaneously reconstructing the reef framework it creates. Restoration projects aim to replicate the complex, porous structures that provide shelter, breeding grounds, and feeding sites for numerous organisms.
