Researchers map breast tumors, uncover dormant cells shielded by surrounding tissue
Researchers have produced a detailed map of breast tumors that reveals previously unseen clusters of dormant cancer cells. The study, conducted by a multidisciplinary team, used high‑resolution imaging to chart the cellular composition of tumor tissue, identifying small pockets where cancer cells remain in a non‑dividing, hibernation‑like state. Because these cells are metabolically quiet, they can avoid the effects of chemotherapy, which targets rapidly proliferating cells, and later re‑enter the growth cycle, potentially leading to tumor recurrence.
The analysis also showed that the dormant cells are frequently encircled by immune cells and fibroblastic connective‑tissue cells, forming a microenvironment that may serve as a protective shield. This arrangement could further insulate the quiescent cancer cells from therapeutic agents and immune surveillance. The findings provide a mechanistic explanation for why some breast cancers return after treatment and suggest new targets for therapies aimed at eradicating these hidden reservoirs.
