Researchers discover pathogen that mimics stink bug symbionts, killing hosts
Researchers at Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), together with colleagues from The University of Electro‑Communications (UEC) and Akita Prefectural University, have identified a previously unknown insect pathogen that targets stink bugs. The microbe infiltrates the insects’ gut symbiotic organ by imitating the structure and chemical signals of the native symbiotic bacteria that the bugs rely on for nutrition and development, allowing it to bypass the host’s defenses and ultimately cause the death of the infected stink bugs.
The study, which details the pathogen’s mimicry strategy and its lethal effects on the host, expands current understanding of insect‑microbe interactions and may inform future research on biological control methods for pest species. By revealing how a pathogen can exploit a symbiotic relationship, the findings highlight the complexity of ecological balances within insect microbiomes and underscore the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in uncovering such mechanisms.
