Researchers develop mice with half-human brain tissue for disease research
Researchers have engineered mice whose brains contain a substantial proportion of human neural tissue in an effort to advance the study of neurological and psychiatric disorders. By transplanting lab‑grown human brain cells into rodents genetically modified to develop without a cerebral cortex or hippocampus, scientists created a vacant niche within the skull that allowed the human cells to integrate and mature alongside the animal’s native structures.
The hybrid models are intended to provide a more accurate platform for investigating the cellular mechanisms underlying conditions such as schizophrenia, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability and rare forms of dementia, and for testing potential therapeutic interventions. Ongoing experiments will assess how closely the human‑mouse brain circuitry replicates disease phenotypes, with the aim of informing future drug development and treatment strategies.
