Reform Party Proposes Navy Use to Stop Small Boats

The government’s Home Affairs spokesperson, Zia Yusuf, has announced that the upcoming naval exercise in the English Channel will be the largest military operation in the waterway since World War II. The statement, made during a briefing for the press, comes as the Ministry of Defence prepares to deploy a flotilla of frigates, destroyers and support vessels to test interoperability with allied forces.

Yusuf explained that the exercise, scheduled to begin next month, will involve coordinated air‑sea drills, anti‑submarine warfare, and joint search‑and‑rescue simulations. He noted that the scale of the deployment—over 30 vessels and 5,000 personnel—exceeds any recent Channel operations and reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining a robust deterrent posture in the region. The Ministry has said that the operation will also serve as a training platform for new technologies, including unmanned surface and underwater vehicles.

The announcement underscores the strategic importance of the English Channel as a key maritime corridor for trade and security. While the exercise is framed as a routine readiness drill, analysts point out that its size and scope are unprecedented in the post‑war era. The operation is expected to conclude in late September, after which the forces will return to their home ports for debriefing and assessment.
