Reductions in volatility priors linked to milder delusions in schizophrenia study
A recent study published in *Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging* has identified a significant link between the reduction of delusional symptoms and changes in patients’ volatility priors—internal models of how unpredictable their surroundings are. The research focused on individuals with schizophrenia‑spectrum disorders who were recovering from an acute psychotic episode, and found that as their delusions lessened, so did their expectations of environmental volatility.
The investigators measured both delusional severity and volatility priors over time, demonstrating that the two variables moved in tandem. Their findings suggest that volatility priors are not fixed traits but can be altered, opening the possibility that therapeutic interventions could target these cognitive expectations to alleviate psychotic symptoms. This represents a shift toward understanding and manipulating the underlying belief systems that contribute to delusional thinking.
If future studies confirm these results, volatility priors could become a novel treatment target in schizophrenia care. By modulating patients’ perceptions of unpredictability, clinicians might reduce the persistence of delusions and improve recovery trajectories for those experiencing acute psychotic episodes.
