Rebuilding homes in Syria's Jobar after war devastation

The eastern Damascus suburb of Jobar, which remained under rebel control for the majority of Syria’s 13‑year civil war, has been left in ruins after a series of intensive government offensives. The area, once a densely populated residential district on the capital’s outskirts, became a focal point of fighting as opposition forces used it as a staging ground for attacks on government positions in Damascus.

Repeated assaults by Syrian government forces, supported by air strikes and artillery, have systematically demolished much of the neighborhood’s infrastructure, including homes, schools and medical facilities. United Nations agencies report that thousands of residents have been displaced, and the destruction has compounded an already severe humanitarian crisis in the capital region. The devastation of Jobar underscores the extensive damage inflicted on urban centers throughout the conflict and highlights the ongoing challenges of reconstruction and civilian recovery.
