Rare Black-Crowned Night Heron Spotted at Somerset Estate

A rare black‑crowned night heron was photographed on Holnicote Estate in the south‑west of England, a site that has become a thriving habitat for birdlife after a river “reset” project restored the River Exe to its natural channel. Conservation teams allowed the waterway to flow freely, creating a mosaic of wetlands, reedbeds and “jungly” corners that now attract a diversity of species.

The heron, a species that is uncommon in the region, was captured on camera near a newly formed reedbed where the river’s renewed floodplain supports abundant fish and invertebrate life. The Holnicote Estate’s restoration work, which began in 2019, has already seen increases in waterfowl, waders and breeding birds, and the sighting of the night heron underscores the success of the initiative.
