Qatar Reports Progress in Oman‑Iran Strait of Hormuz Negotiations

Doha – Qatar’s foreign ministry announced on Saturday that talks between Oman and Iran concerning the future management of commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz are “making major progress.” The two Gulf states, which share a maritime border along the narrow waterway, have been negotiating a framework that could formalize coordination on security, traffic monitoring and emergency response for vessels transiting the strategic chokepoint.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil passes, has been a flashpoint for regional tension, with past incidents of vessel harassment and occasional threats of closure. Oman, which has traditionally acted as a neutral mediator, and Iran, a key regional power, are seeking a mutually acceptable arrangement that would reassure international shipping firms while preserving each nation’s sovereign interests. Qatar, positioning itself as a diplomatic conduit, said the advancing dialogue reflects a shared desire to maintain uninterrupted maritime trade and reduce the risk of disruption in global energy markets.
