Post-Hormuz era presents opportunity for Africa's maritime development

African leaders are urging the continent to adopt a unified maritime strategy to fully leverage the economic and security advantages offered by its extensive coastlines and inland waterways. At a recent summit of the African Union’s Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, officials highlighted the potential for increased trade, job creation, and resource management that a coordinated policy could unlock across the 30,000‑kilometre Atlantic and Indian Ocean fronts.

Stakeholders emphasized that a common maritime framework would address challenges such as illegal fishing, piracy, and environmental degradation while facilitating smoother customs procedures and investment in port infrastructure. By harmonizing regulations, standards, and development plans, the continent aims to attract foreign capital, improve supply‑chain efficiency, and ensure sustainable use of marine resources, positioning Africa to capture the full benefits of its maritime assets.
