Polyethylene plastic may worsen fatty liver disease when combined with an unhealthy diet
Microplastics are now a ubiquitous presence in the environment, found in oceans, drinking water and even within the human body. Yet their impact on human health remains poorly understood. A new study from the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) has shed light on one of the most common plastic polymers, polyethylene, and its potential role in metabolic disease.
The researchers exposed laboratory animals to polyethylene particles and monitored liver health over time. Their results revealed that the plastic alone can trigger the development of fatty liver disease, and that the condition worsens when the animals are fed a diet high in fats and sugars. The study suggests that polyethylene may act as a metabolic disruptor, amplifying the harmful effects of an unhealthy diet on liver function.
These findings add a new dimension to the growing concern over microplastic pollution. While the study was conducted in an animal model, it underscores the need for further research into how everyday plastic exposure might influence human metabolic health. The authors call for additional investigations to confirm whether similar mechanisms operate in humans and to guide public health policy on plastic use and waste management.
