Pollinators Shift Later in Human‑Modified Landscapes, Study Finds
Human development may be changing more than where pollinators live—it may also be shifting the timing of their activity. Researchers from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) have found that pollinator seasons are moving later into the year across some of the most heavily altered landscapes in the eastern United States. By comparing long‑term phenological records from urban, suburban, and agricultural sites, the team documented a consistent delay in the start of pollinator activity, suggesting that human‑induced environmental changes are altering the synchrony between insects and the plants they pollinate.
The study examined data from multiple pollinator species, including bees, butterflies, and other insects, across a gradient of land‑use intensity. In highly modified areas—such as cities and intensive farmlands—pollinators began their active periods several weeks later than in more natural settings. The researchers attribute this shift to factors such as altered temperature regimes, changes in plant phenology, and the influence of artificial light and pollutants that can disrupt insect behavior. These findings raise concerns about potential mismatches between pollinators and the flowering times of crops and native plants, which could impact food production and ecosystem resilience.
