Meteor Shower Season Underway: Multiple Showers Peak in July and August

A spectacular display of celestial activity is underway as the Perseid meteor shower begins tonight, July 17. This annual event, one of the most popular and widely anticipated meteor showers of the year, is expected to produce a high volume of shooting stars throughout the month and into August. The Perseid meteor shower is not the only show in town, however, as two other notable showers - the Alpha Capricornids and the Southern Delta Aquariids - are also active during this period.

The combination of these three showers means that stargazers have a higher chance of spotting "shooting stars" on any given night this month and next. The Perseid meteor shower, in particular, is known for its fast-moving and bright meteors, which are caused by the Earth passing through the debris trail left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet. While the exact peak of the Perseid shower is expected to occur around mid-August, the showers are expected to remain active throughout July and August, providing ample opportunities for those interested in viewing the celestial spectacle.
