Perkins urges IOC to modernise Brisbane 2032 sports programme

Former Olympic gold‑medal swimmer and Australia’s most senior sport executive, Kieren Perkins, has urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to modernise the sporting programme for Brisbane 2032. Perkins argues that several current Olympic sports lack “modern relevance” and that the Games should reflect contemporary sporting interests. He specifically highlighted the need to reconsider the inclusion of sports that have not evolved in line with global trends.

The IOC has acknowledged the challenge of managing an expanding roster of sports. Sydney 2000 featured 28 sports, while Los Angeles 2028 is slated to host 36, many of which contain multiple disciplines—such as road and track cycling—that demand separate venues. The committee is therefore exploring ways to curb the long‑term trend of increasing sports numbers, aiming to streamline the Games and reduce logistical complexity.

Perkins’ call comes amid broader discussions about the future of the Olympics, as host cities balance tradition with innovation. While the IOC has not yet announced specific changes for Brisbane, the dialogue underscores the ongoing debate over which sports should remain part of the Olympic programme and how best to align the Games with contemporary sporting culture.
