The U.S. Midwest has been a hub of maize-based agriculture for nearly two centuries, with the region's fertile soils supporting the growth of this staple crop. However, a recent study has revealed a concerning consequence of this long-standing agricultural practice: the significant depletion of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. Compared to the region's native tallgrass prairies, SOC levels in maize-based soils have been halved, leading to soil erosion and decreased fertility. This decline in SOC levels has far-reaching implications for the region's agricultural productivity and the environment.
Researchers have identified a potential solution to this problem: replacing annual maize/soy cropping with perennial bioenergy grasses. These grasses, which include species such as switchgrass and big bluestem, have been shown to sequester carbon in the soil at a rate comparable to that of the region's native prairies. By adopting this approach, farmers in the U.S. Midwest may be able to partially reverse the SOC deficits that have developed over centuries of maize-based agriculture. This shift in agricultural practice not only has the potential to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also can improve soil health and fertility, ultimately benefiting the region's agricultural productivity.
