Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell among candidates for new Army secretary

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell has emerged as one of at least four candidates being evaluated for the position of Army secretary, according to sources familiar with the selection process who spoke to The Hill this week. The candidates are being considered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has identified Parnell as his top choice to lead the service. The Army secretary role, which oversees a $180 billion budget and more than one million soldiers, is slated to become vacant later this year as the current secretary prepares to depart for a senior White House appointment.

The shortlist also includes at least two current officials, among them Marc Anderson, an assistant secretary within the department, as well as other senior defense‑department leaders whose names have not been disclosed.
