Peace Board envoy warns ceasefire collapse could be point of no return

Nickolay Mladenov, the United Nations special envoy for Syria, warned on Tuesday that the disintegration of the ceasefire brokered in October would represent “a point of no return” for the war‑torn region. The ceasefire, which was intended to halt hostilities between the Syrian government and opposition forces and to create space for humanitarian aid, has been under strain amid renewed fighting in several provinces and accusations of violations by both sides.

Mladenov emphasized that a collapse of the truce could trigger a rapid escalation of violence, undermine diplomatic initiatives, and deepen the humanitarian crisis that has already displaced millions. He called on all parties to respect the agreement and urged the international community to reinforce monitoring mechanisms to prevent further breakdowns. The envoy’s statement comes as regional actors and UN partners intensify efforts to sustain the fragile peace and avert a broader destabilization of the Middle East.
