PathSay Project Uses AI to Bridge Language Gaps
Thousands of the world’s languages remain largely invisible to modern translation technology, a gap that researchers and students at Brigham Young University (BYU) are actively working to close. In a new initiative called Pathsay, BYU’s MATRIX lab is collaborating with international students from the BYU‑Pathway Worldwide program to gather speech and text data for low‑resource languages. The effort aims to enrich machine‑learning models with authentic linguistic material that has historically been underrepresented.
The Pathsay project focuses on collecting high‑quality recordings and written samples from communities that lack robust digital resources. By engaging native speakers in the data‑collection process, the team ensures cultural accuracy and linguistic nuance while building a repository that can be used to train translation algorithms. The initiative also serves an archival purpose, preserving endangered languages and dialects for future generations.
Through this partnership, BYU hopes to improve access to translation tools for populations that are often overlooked by mainstream technology.
