Palestinians in West Bank Hold Firm on Indigenous Peoples' Day

Israeli settlers and the Israeli military have intensified actions that residents of the West Bank say are aimed at displacing Palestinian communities. The campaign, reported by local inhabitants and human‑rights groups, involves a series of home demolitions, land expropriations and security operations across several villages near major settlement blocs. Residents of the villages of Turmus Ayya, Qusra and parts of the Hebron Hills described coordinated raids in which soldiers escorted settler groups, removed structures deemed “illegal” by Israeli authorities and barred Palestinians from accessing agricultural fields.

The demolitions have been justified by the Israeli Civil Administration on the grounds that the structures lack building permits, a requirement that is rarely granted to Palestinians in the occupied territories. International observers note that the permits are often issued only to settlements, while the same criteria are applied inconsistently to Palestinian homes. Human‑rights organizations have documented at least 45 homes demolished and over 200 families threatened with eviction since the start of the year, citing the expansion of nearby settlements such as Ma’ale Adumim and Ariel as a driving factor. The military’s presence, described by witnesses as protective of settler activities, has limited the ability of Palestinian residents to contest the actions through legal channels.

The ongoing displacement effort has drawn criticism from United Nations agencies and the European Union, which have called for an independent investigation and the suspension of demolition orders pending due process. Israeli officials maintain that the operations are lawful and necessary for security and planning purposes. As the situation develops, Palestinian communities continue to seek legal recourse and international support while facing mounting pressure on their homes and livelihoods.
