Pakistan urges US-Iran dialogue amid renewed tensions

Islamabad has reiterated its call for diplomatic dialogue between Washington and Tehran as tensions between the United States and Iran intensify following a series of retaliatory strikes and heightened rhetoric in the region. The Pakistani foreign ministry emphasized the need for a negotiated settlement to prevent further destabilisation of South‑Asia, noting that the escalation threatens trade routes, energy supplies and the security of its own borders. The latest flare‑up began after a U.S. drone strike that killed senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard officers, prompting Iran to vow “proportionate” retaliation and to increase its naval presence in the Arabian Sea.

Security analysts argue that Pakistan possesses limited leverage to curb the confrontation, lacking both the military capacity and the diplomatic clout to compel either side to de‑escalate. While Islamabad can offer mediation and host back‑channel talks, its influence is constrained by competing interests with both the United States and Iran, and by domestic political pressures. Consequently, experts warn that without external pressure or a shift in U.S. or Iranian strategy, the risk of broader regional spillover remains high, leaving Pakistan to manage the fallout rather than halt the escalation outright.
