Over 1 million affected by Assam floods as monsoon rains displace thousands

Thousands of people across several Indian states have been forced from their homes since July after unusually heavy monsoon rains triggered widespread flooding. The deluge inundated low‑lying districts in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Odisha, submerging villages, damaging infrastructure and cutting off access to essential services. Government estimates put the number of displaced individuals at over 150,000, with many seeking shelter in temporary camps set up by local authorities and disaster‑relief agencies.

Relief operations have mobilised the National Disaster Response Force, the Indian Army and state disaster management teams to conduct evacuations, distribute food and medical supplies, and restore critical road and power links. Officials warned that continued rainfall could exacerbate the situation, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow evacuation orders. As recovery efforts continue, authorities are assessing long‑term mitigation measures to reduce the impact of future monsoon‑related floods.
