Over 1,000 sexual violence cases documented in Ukraine since Russia's invasion

Over 1,000 incidents of sexual violence against civilians and prisoners of war have been recorded in Ukraine from the onset of Russia’s invasion in February 2022 through the end of July 2024. The tally, compiled by Ukrainian authorities in conjunction with international monitoring groups, represents the most extensive collection of such cases since the conflict began.

The documented assaults span multiple oblasts and involve both men and women, with victims ranging from displaced families to captured combatants. Reports have been submitted to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the International Criminal Court and several non‑governmental organizations, which are evaluating the evidence as potential violations of international humanitarian law. Ukrainian officials have indicated that investigations are underway and that forensic teams are working to corroborate testimonies and preserve material evidence.

International bodies have called for thorough accountability measures, emphasizing that the alleged crimes could constitute war crimes under the Geneva Conventions. The ongoing inquiries aim to identify perpetrators, provide support to survivors, and ensure that any violations are addressed in forthcoming legal proceedings.
