Organized FIT Screening Program Reduces Colorectal Cancer Mortality
A recent study published online on August 5 in *JAMA Network Open* reports that an organized colorectal cancer (CRC) screening program using fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) is linked to a sustained decline in CRC mortality. The research, which followed a large population over several years, evaluated the impact of systematic FIT distribution and follow‑up compared with usual care or no organized screening.
The investigators found that individuals enrolled in the FIT‑based program had a statistically significant reduction in CRC deaths, with the mortality decline continuing throughout the follow‑up period. The study also highlighted higher screening adherence rates and earlier detection of precancerous lesions among program participants, suggesting that organized screening improves both uptake and clinical outcomes.
These findings reinforce the value of population‑level FIT screening initiatives in reducing colorectal cancer mortality and support continued investment in organized screening infrastructure to maintain and expand these gains.
