Opioids Linked to Respiratory Depression Risk
A study led by University of Manchester researchers has found that certain opioids, including fentanyl, oxycodone, morphine, and combination opioid treatments, carry a higher risk of adverse effects compared to codeine when used for non-cancer pain management. The research, published in a major new analysis, highlights the association between these medications and increased likelihood of respiratory depression, a potentially life-threatening complication. The findings aim to inform clinical decision-making by identifying opioids with varying safety profiles.
The study evaluated data from patients prescribed opioids for non-cancer-related pain, comparing the risk of respiratory depression across different medications. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, and combination therapies—such as those pairing opioids with other analgesics—were linked to the highest risks. Oxycodone and morphine also showed elevated risk levels compared to codeine, which was associated with the lowest risk in the analysis. Researchers emphasized that while these drugs are effective for pain relief, their safety profiles must be carefully weighed, particularly in outpatient settings where monitoring may be limited.
