OpenAI acquires Glass Imaging for $300 million
Glass Imaging, a newly launched imaging technology company, was founded by two former Apple engineers who previously headed the team responsible for developing Apple’s Portrait Mode. The startup aims to leverage the duo’s expertise in computational photography to create advanced imaging solutions for a range of devices.
The founders’ experience with Portrait Mode—a feature that uses depth mapping and machine‑learning algorithms to produce studio‑quality portraits on smartphones—provides Glass Imaging with a strong technical foundation. By building on the proprietary techniques honed at Apple, the company intends to offer developers and manufacturers tools that enhance photo quality and depth perception across platforms. Industry observers note that the venture could accelerate the adoption of sophisticated camera capabilities beyond Apple’s ecosystem.
