Yale University researchers found that GLP-1 receptor agonist prescriptions, commonly used for weight loss and diabetes management, could be obtained online with alarming ease using fabricated patient profiles, according to a study published in the *Journal of the American Medical Association* (JAMA) on July 6. The study revealed that researchers successfully secured prescriptions from 49 telehealth websites, with some providers issuing prescriptions in under five minutes and requiring minimal clinical interaction, raising concerns about the oversight of these medications in the digital health landscape.
The investigation, conducted by a team of medical and policy experts, simulated patient requests for GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide and liraglutide, which have surged in popularity due to their efficacy in weight management. Researchers reported that 87% of the websites reviewed provided prescriptions without requiring a comprehensive medical history or diagnostic evaluation. In some cases, clinicians spent less than two minutes reviewing patient information before approving the request. The findings underscore vulnerabilities in telehealth platforms, where regulatory safeguards may be inconsistent, potentially enabling misuse or diversion of these potent medications.
The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) responded to the study by emphasizing its commitment to “responsible and ethical care” but noted that prescribing practices vary by platform. The researchers called for stricter verification processes, including mandatory in-person consultations for initial prescriptions and enhanced clinician training to assess patient suitability.
