A study led by researchers at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has revealed that excess abdominal fat significantly elevates the risk of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), challenging prior findings that higher body mass index (BMI) might correlate with lower cancer risk. Published in the *Journal of Thoracic Oncology*, the research demonstrates that obesity—particularly visceral fat accumulation—impairs the immune system’s ability to combat early tumor formation, a mechanism previously unlinked to lung cancer progression.
The team analyzed how adipose tissue in the abdominal region influences immune responses, finding that obese individuals exhibit reduced activity of tumor-fighting T cells and increased levels of immunosuppressive molecules. This creates an environment conducive to tumor growth, even in the absence of traditional risk factors like smoking. The study contrasts earlier studies suggesting a protective effect of higher BMI, which may have conflated overall weight with fat distribution or overlooked immune system dynamics.
